Mosley was hit with its first bit of adversity over two months before its season even started, and it was a big hit, with starting senior center T'ara Ceasar suffering a torn ACL early in the Dolphins' volleyball team's season. However, not even the loss of their second-leading scorer and top rebounder from a season ago could prevent the Dolphins from notching their second consecutive district championship. Mosley completed its second straight perfect league season by cruising past Bay 65-41 in Friday night's District 1-6A championship game at Arnold High School. J'Mya Broglen scored 18 points to lead the Dolphins (15-9), followed by Ja'Tayvia Holley and Ladaiiza Taylor with 16 each, and Jasmine Patterson with 11. Lucinda Willis led Bay (13-9) with 18 points, with Kelsey Reilly and Christionna Faison scoring eight points each. Mosley will next play host to District 2 runner-up Godby (12-11), while Bay will start the Region 1-6A playoffs on the road against District 2 champion Rickards (26-2). Just being in position to now make a playoff run after losing such an important player before the year is a testament to the Dolphins' depth and resiliency, coach Jon Mason said. "Losing T'ara early, that hurt," he said. "It wasn't necessarily just the point production and the rebound production; her leadership is what we mostly took a hit on. But the younger kids stepped up and had to play a lot of minutes for us and a couple of transfers coming in from some not-so-traditional winning programs made a difference. They were excited to be a part of it and they just play a big part in what we do." Despite losing both regular season meetings by 36 and 39 points, the Tornadoes looked every bit the part of a district title contender in the early going Friday, overcoming three first-quarter 3-pointers by Mosley to close to within two at 17-15 following a layup by Willis following a Dolphins' turnover. Mosley started to get some separation in the second quarter, with a 3-pointer by Mattie Towson, a driving basket by Patterson, and a pair of free throws by Taylor making it 28-17 with 3:16 to halftime. A corner three by Holley pushed the lead to 38-24 and the margin remained 14 at 40-26 at the break. The Dolphins then blew the game open with an 11-0 run to start the third quarter, getting a layup by Holley, a pair of baskets by Broglen, and two jumpers by Holley, the last of which came with a foul to make a three-point play and put Mosley up 51-26 with 3:19 on the clock. Bay answered with an 8-1 run to trim the deficit to 18 after three following a basket by Faison in the closing seconds of the quarter. But Broglen came back with a 3-pointer and a driving basket to spark a 9-0 Mosley run to increase the advantage to 63-36 and put the game away for good. Despite the big win, Mason said his players are going to need to be consistently sharper if they want to make a run in the playoffs.
