Ken Berry has been selected to lead the WRHS Softball Team as the Interim Head Coach for the 2017 Softball Season. Coach Berry is a 1959 Washburn Rural HS graduate were he excelled in football, basketball, and track. He attended WSU on a football scholarship and was drafted in 1961 by the Chicago White Sox.. In 1967 he was voted an American League All-Star. He is a two-time Gold Glove winner. Coach Berry has managed the Kingsport Mets Rookie Team, the San Diego Padres Arizona Rookie Team, and the Chicago White Sox AA team in Birmingham. He has been a manager, coach, hitting instructor in the minor leagues for 26 years. He was on staff as the hitting instructor in the minor league system for the Kansas City Royals in 1985 when they won World Series. In the application process, Coach Berry stated, “This is a tremendous opportunity. I have been following the program for years and am excited to get started.”

Announcing his appointment to the position, Penny Lane, WRHS Athletic Director said that, “The Washburn Rural High School Softball program is one of the best in the state. Coach Berry brings great knowledge of the game to the plate. We welcome him to the Junior Blue family and look forward to his leadership in this transitional period for our program.” Berry will assume his new coaching duties in February 27, 2017.
