Bishop England girls roll past Strom Thurmond

All-state guard Rhetta Moore scored a game-high 26 points and Katie Cullum added 21 to lead Bishop England past Strom Thurmond 74-52 on Thursday in the second round of the Class AAA girls basketball state

playoffs.

The three-time defending state champion Lady Bishops will travel to Dillon on Monday in the Lower State semifinal round. Bishop England has advanced into the third round of the postseason each of the past 11 years.

Dillon, the No. 1 seed out of Region 6, defeated Battery Creek, 54-37, on Thursday.

“We just made more plays than (Strom Thurmond) did when we had to,” Bishops coach Paul Runey said. “We maybe got a little comfortable at times. But we’re working harder to be consistent, knowing that a little slip here and a little slip there could end it all.”

Strom Thurmond jumped out to a 15-8 lead through the opening six minutes of the first quarter, attacking the Bishops with an aggressive man pressure and connecting on eight field-goal attempts at the other end.

The Bishops responded with their own full-court fury that sparked a 10-4 run through the final 1:42 to pull themselves within a point by the quarter’s end. Bishop England then held Strom Thurmond without a basket until the final moments of the second quarter while it busted open a 38-24 halftime advantage.
