The Philadelphia Lady Tornadoes picked up their second Region 5-3A victory Friday night as they defeated Choctaw County 37-31 in prep basketball action. The Lady Tornadoes went 1-1 last week. On Tuesday, they dropped a 61-38 decision to Southeast Lauderdale. The Lady Tornadoes take a 13-8 record in this week. They stand at 2-3 in the region standings The Philadelphia boys lost both of their games as they fell 51-31 to Southeast Lauderdale and 51-42 to Choctaw County. The Tornadoes entered the week with a 13-8 record. Philadelphia will be on road this week. They were to visit Kemper County on Tuesday and Choctaw Central on Friday. Trailing 6-4 after the first quarter, the Lady Tornadoes outscored Choctaw County 11-7 to take a 15-13 halftime lead. Philadelphia would outscore Choctaw County 22-18 in the second half to claim the win. Nia Luckett led the Lady Tornadoes with eight points while Andrike Carter and Tkasmin Colston both added six points. The Southeast Lauderdale girls jumped out to a 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and the Lady Tornadoes never got close. Carter scored eight points and Precious Sanders scored seven. “It was good to get the win,” Coach Jason Broom said. “Again, we are getting good shots but they aren’t going in. We have to score more than 40 points to beat the better teams in our region. We aren’t giving up.” Philadelphia boys took an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter against Southeast Lauderdale. But then the Tigers held them to single digits in each of last three quarters. Southeast would hold a 23-16 lead at the half, and outscored Philadelphia 28-15 in the second half. Darius Davis led Philadelphia with 11 points. Choctaw County went up 15-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Tornadoes battled back, outscoring the Chargers 16-15 in the second quarter and trailed 30-21 at the break. Both teams scored 20 points in the second half as the Chargers held on for the victory. Davis led with 13 points while Jonathan Edwards added nine. The Tornadoes stand at 0-5 in region play.
